More Children Not Raised by Biological Parents
More Children Not Raised by Biological Parents
DETROIT (PRWEB) November 10, 2011
Increasing numbers of children in the United States are not being raised by their biological parents. According to Census data from 2010, 4.9 million children in America are being raised by their grandparents. This number is nearly double the 2000 data that indicated 2.4 million children were being raised primarily by grandparents. For families in that situation, Elaine K. Williams offers tools, suggestions and insights from more than 60 grandparents in her new book, The Sacred Work of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (published by Balboa Press).
“Implicit in understanding what it means for grandparents to raise their grandchildren is an appreciation for the cost that this growing trend has on our society, our elders, and, most important, our children,” says Williams.
After catching, by accident, Hillary Clinton’s 2007 speech in Washington, D.C. to 1000 parenting grandparents, Williams heard the story of a 19-year-old girl, who thanked her grandparents for giving her a life she may never have had without them. Realizing how many grandparents face this same challenge every day, including her sister, Williams crafted her new book to bring understanding, suggestions, and support to millions.
Williams’ book carefully considers the impact of abuse, neglect and abandonment on children and their developmental growth. She also reflects on a wide range of issues including the physical, psychological, emotional, social, and inter-generational challenges grandparents and their grandchildren face. Williams also shares insights gathered directly from the parenting grandparents she interviewed for the book who shared their stories so openly. Through storytelling, the author honors the work and sacrifices parenting grandparents make in order to raise their grandchildren.
